In July 2010, Blacks in Government’s implementation of its Future Leaders in America’s Government (FLAG) pilot program was designed to provide many program benefits including customized skills development to prepare youth to be productive citizens; year-round professional and personal coaching and guidance from BIG mentors; students provided opportunity to gain valuable life and work experience; networking opportunities with career minded peers; develop a training ground for future BIG members; access to scholarship opportunities; community involvement; increase in overall BIG membership; develop a training ground for future BIG leaders; and use the youth voice in addressing major issues that affect Blacks in government.  The program is designed around five critical areas that will help prepare youth to reach their full potential - mentorship; financial literacy and leadership training; career training and education; pre-professional career opportunities (internships); and scholarship opportunities.

On January 29, 2011, the FMS-BIG Chapter’s Future Leaders in America’s Government (FLAG) Committee had its kick-off meeting to officially implement the Chapter’s Junior FLAG Program.  The eight (8) students in the Junior FLAG Program attend Flowers High School in Springdale, Maryland.  The students named the FLAG Program the CHF FLAG Program in memory of Dr. Charles H. Flowers, legendary Tuskegee Airman, who passed on January 28, 2011.  They also selected officers and decided to pursue the internship tier to begin their learning experience.
The FMS-BIG Chapter FLAG Committee members include Dorothy Washington, Donna Harper, Gloria Casteel, Joan Andrews, Margie Neville, Deborah King and Jacqueline Rich.  The FLAG Committee meets with the students and parents monthly at the PG Building in Room 164.  In addition, the students meet at school once per week.

The FLAG Committee looks forward to mentoring and providing guidance to the FLAG students as they continue to progress through this program.
