FMS-BIG Chapter End of Year Events - 2009
The FMS-BIG Chapter’s Program, Planning, and Education Committee and Public Relations and Communications Committee coordinated three successful community service events from September thru November 2009.

In September and October 2009, the Chapter sponsored a winter coat drive.  With the generosity of FMS employees and CThe FMS-BIG Chapter’s Program, Planning, and Education Committee and Public Relations and Communications Committee coordinated three successful community service events from September thru November 2009.

In September and October 2009, the Chapter sponsored a winter coat drive.  With the generosity of FMS employees and Chapter members, over 75 new and gently used coats were collected which will provide warmth to men, women and children in the cold winter months.  In addition, thanks to a suggestion from Chapter member Deborah King, the Chapter donated some of the coats to the Church of Christ located at 13th and Irving Streets, N.W., Washington, D.C., who provides meals to the homeless once a month.  On Saturday, October 24, 2009, Deborah King and members of the Church of Christ visited two parks in Washington, D.C., and distributed meals and coats to men, women, and children, who were excited and grateful for what they received.

On October 5, 2009, three Chapter members attended an orientation session at the Walter Reed Army Medical Center (WRAMC) Community Services Office.  The goal of the orientation session was to learn what opportunities were available for the Chapter to participate in to provide community service to soldiers and their families at WRAMC.  One of the volunteer activities that was of interest to the Chapter involved partnering with the organization CAUSE (Comfort for America’s Uniformed Services) located in Alexandria, Virginia, to assemble gift packs for soldiers.  A gift pack is a great way to send a personal “thank you” to soldiers injured in service to our country.  The gift packs are filled with items designed to bring a bit of comfort and recreation to soldiers and to the family members at their side and are delivered monthly to WRAMC.
On Sunday, November 15, 2009, Chapter members Dorothy Washington, Donna Harper, Gloria Casteel, Cheryl Dixon, Gayle Williams, Wendell Smith, and Shelby Smith (daughter of Wendell Smith) assembled approximately 60 gift packs, including items such as hand held electronic games, toiletries, tee-shirts, blankets, books, and phone cards.  The FMS-BIG Chapter donated thirty (30) electronic hand held games for the gift packs.  This was an exciting opportunity and everyone who participated was grateful that they were able to be involved in this effort.

The last project for 2009 that the Chapter decided to pursue and completed was the collection of donated food items to accompany a turkey and trimmings for assembly and distribution of Thanksgiving baskets for four families identified through Prince Georges County’s social services.  The Thanksgiving baskets were delivered to the families a few days before Thanksgiving.  All of the families were overwhelmed and expressed joy and gratitude.

The FMS-BIG Chapter will continue to provide quality community service to the surrounding communities in 2010.
