FMS-BIG Chapter Wins Blacks in Government National Awards

Congratulations to the FMS-BIG Chapter for being selected as the recipient of the Blacks in Government (BIG) 2008 National Prestige Award for Distinguished Service at the National Training Conference (NTC) in New Orleans, Louisiana. This annual honorary award provides the opportunity to give recognition to a BIG Chapter, Region, or Group whose deeds and contributions in furtherance of the goals and objectives of the organization have been so exemplary and/or significant that they are deserving of special honor and praise.
The Distinguished Service Award was presented to the FMS-BIG Chapter during the Closing Plenary Excellence in Government Service Awards and Recognition Banquet of the National Training Conference.
The FMS-BIG Chapter has demonstrated outstanding achievements during 2007 because it believes in the goals and objectives that BIG exemplifies. The FMS-BIG Chapter achievements were accomplished because we maintained our Chapter in good financial status, and complied with our Chapter By-Laws, Regional By-Laws, and the National Constitution. We have consistently supported education and training, our community, and recognized our members for their contributions. The following are examples of our accomplishments:
The FMS-BIG Chapter has consistently maintained its membership and has increased its membership in 2007. In addition to receiving the Distinguished Service Award, the Chapter received the Sterling Membership Award, presented to those Chapters who have excelled in recruiting and retaining new members Examples of recruitment efforts included a “Bring a Friend” to a Chapter meeting campaign and a Life Membership Drive with incentives for our regular members to become life members. The Chapter gained thirteen (13) new members, bringing the total membership to 100. There were four (4) additional life members. The Chapter is proud that it has forty (40) life members and six (6) Gold Plus members.
Each year the Chapter conducts four (4) fundraisers to cover the cost to give scholarships to students; to fund the Gloria D. Johnson Award for a member who has provided outstanding service throughout the year; to be able to send the Chapter President and one other member who was disapproved by their supervisor because of the agency’s budget constraints to the National Training Conference; and to assist with the overall Chapter costs for programs such as outreach and education.
The Chapter partnered with the Office of Equal Opportunity and Diversity (OEOD) on the Financial Management Service’s Black History Month Program.
The Program, Planning and Education Committee sponsored the Chapter’s participation in BIG’s National Youth Program 2007 Oratorical Competition. Three students competed in our Chapter level contest. Our student representative in the 11th/12th grade oratorical competition won the Region XI competition and was the First Place winner in the National Oratorical Competition at the NTC in Nashville, Tennessee.
