The Future Leaders in America’s Government Program (FLAG) provides opportunities for junior high, high school, and college students to grow socially, intellectually, and emotionally.  This program is designed to successfully meet the developmental needs for our youth and help them become productive citizens and to ensure that they will have the opportunity for full, complete and equitable access to jobs, education, advancement, housing and health services.  The program is composed of five tiers: Mentorship; Training Academy; Career Training and Education; Pre-Professional Career Opportunities (Internships); and College Scholarships.
Our first meeting of the year with the students was held on Saturday, January 28, 2012.  The students reported their individual activities during the school year and selected their next tier to pursue.  Once the initial business was concluded, a presentation on “Leadership” for our FLAG students was presented by Dr. James Gray.  Dr. Gray gave an outstanding presentation.  His presentation was very interactive as he concentrated on having the students actively participate and speak out.  Leadership 101: An Introduction to Concepts and Practice included the purpose, working definition of leadership, translation, skills that make effective leaders, and styles and behaviors of leaders.   He asked each student to name someone who they admired and to tell why.   In another exercise, each person chose a quote in a random drawing and was asked to explain what the quote meant to them.  Dr. Gray’s presentation was well accepted by the students.  On behalf of the FLAG committee members and the FLAG students, he was thanked for providing such an informative workshop.
The FMS-BIG Chapter’s FLAG Committee members are:  Dorothy Washington, Advisor, Donna Harper, Margie Neville, Joan Andrews, Deborah King. Jacqueline Rich, and Gloria Casteel for all the efforts needed to make this program a success.
In January 2011, the FMS-BIG Chapter established a FLAG Program with interested students from the 9th - 12th grades at Charles Herbert Flowers High School located in Springdale, Maryland. The students chose to call their FLAG program the Charles Herbert Flowers Program (CHF) in remembrance of the Tuskegee Airman being honored that year.  Our meetings with the students are held on the fourth Saturday of the month at the PGMC Building.  Meetings are conducted only during the school year.  Parents are welcomed as well.  In addition, the students hold group meetings at school at least twice a month.
