FMS-BIG Chapter Ends 2008 With Two Regional Awards
Each year, Blacks in Government, Region XI, recognizes Chapters and individuals for outstanding achievements during the year. On December 6, 2008, at the Region XI Holiday Gala, the FMS-BIG Chapter was selected as the recipient of two Region XI awards and received two beautiful plaques. These awards are (1) Chapter Involvement Award and (2) Community Service Award. This is exceptional, considering there are 56 Chapters within Region XI.
The FMS-BIG Chapter members exemplified outstanding contributions for the employees of the Financial Management Service. Following are some examples of achievements that illustrate Chapter involvement and community service:
The Chapter sponsored the Agency’s 2008 Black History Program. The EEO/AA and Legislative Committee took the lead in arranging weekly brown bag seminars with guest speakers, workshops, and entertainment for the entire month.
The Chapter partnered with the OEOD Division with the “Take Your Sons and Daughters to Work Day”, in which a workshop on Community Service was presented to the students and described the importance of helping others, Including parents and the elderly.
The Chapter’s Program, Planning and Education Committee participated in BIG’s National Youth Oratorical and Information Superhighway Program Competition. The Chapter had one student representative in the Information Superhighway (website design) competition who placed second at the Region competition.
The Chapter held several membership drives during the year to increase membership. They were the “Bring a Friend” to a Chapter meeting and Life membership drives. In addition, during FMS’ Diversity Day, the Chapter set up a membership booth, as well as a voter registration booth.
Several fundraisers were held to benefit the Chapter’s Scholarship Program. In 2008,
the Chapter awarded scholarships in the amount of $1,100.00 each to six (6) well deserving students who met eligibility requirements set forth by the Chapter’s Scholarship Committee. The recipients of the awards were family members of FMS-BIG Chapter members. It is important that the Chapter help support the education of our children so that they will have a future.
The Chapter’s Program, Planning and Education Committee held brown bag seminars
for all FMS employees on “AFLAC Insurance”, “Handling Your Financial Business”,
and “Weight Matters”.
The Chapter sponsored a coat and blanket drive for the homeless. Chapter members
donated approximately 75 coats for men, women, and children; and also donated
blankets to the CCNV Shelter in Washington, D.C.
A Chapter member was presented with the Gloria D. Johnson Award, which is presented annually to a member for their exemplary and noteworthy contributions to the Chapter. Gloria D. Johnson was a former Chapter member who passed in 2003.
The Chapter participated in the Agency’s Health Fair distributing information on health issues.
The Chapter supported a school supply drive for students in New Orleans affected by Hurricane Katrina. Members of the Public Relations and Communications Committee received the donated school supplies, packed several boxes, and shipped them to New Orleans.
The Public Relations and Communications Committee sponsored an essay contest
(Theme was “The Most Influential Person in My Life”) for the students at Thomas
Johnson Middle School. Thomas Johnson Middle School is the Chapter’s adopted
school.
The FMS-BIG Chapter has made numerous noteworthy contributions to FMS and the community. The Chapter feels that we have made a direct and positive impact at FMS and on the quality of life for the surrounding community.
The Chapter will continue to make FMS proud of its accomplishments.
