Chapter's Activities/Accomplishments 2008
FMS Intern Participates in Blacks in Government (BIG) 2008 Youth Program

Each year, Blacks in Government sponsors its Youth Program Oratorical and Information Superhighway Competitions for students in grades 9-12.

The Blacks in Government Information Superhighway Student Competition provides students the chance to develop computer skills and demonstrate their expertise and creativity on the information superhighway.  Students design a website that shows their knowledge of new technology.  The theme for the competition was “Recognizing the Potential and Power of Simulation Technology”.

Congratulations to FMS intern Norbert Azongho, who works in the Platform Engineering Division, Information Resources, for his participation in the Information Superhighway Competition.

When Norbert was asked if he wanted to register for the Blacks in Government Youth Program Information Superhighway Competition and represent the FMS-BIG Chapter, he was excited, said “yes” and immediately began to design his website.

On June 11, 2008, Norbert presented his website to members of the FMS-BIG Chapter.  His presentation was judged by Calvin Kidd, Information Resources, and Brian Hall, a contractor with Information Resources, who provided helpful tips to Norbert to prepare him for his presentation at the Region XI competition.  Norbert’s website presentation was judged on specific criteria, including demonstration of expertise, display of creativity, narrative of page creation, usefulness of project after the competition, and a 4-6 minute oral presentation of the website.

On June 28, 2008, the Region XI Information Superhighway/Oratorical Competitions were held at the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration in Silver Spring, Maryland. Norbert competed in the 11th/12th grade level of the competition, and won Second Place.  He was awarded a beautiful plaque, $250 savings bond, and a reference book on African Americans and their achievements.  Norbert expressed his gratitude for having the opportunity to experience this program and to interact with other students as well.

Much thanks are extended to FMS-BIG Chapter members Dorothy Washington, Deborah King, Joann Mackey and Donna Harper for their coordination and participation in organizing this effort.
